Biking Adventures: Bixby Knolls to Shoreline Village, Long Beach

One of the benefits of living near Bixby Knolls is that there is an entrance to the Los Angeles River bike path deep inside the Virginia Country Club, located in Bixby Knolls!

Today, Allan and I decided to make use of this. We got our bikes ready and decided to bike over to Shoreline Village, located in Downtown Long Beach.

The route is roughly five miles one way, so we did about ten miles of biking today, altogether.

As usual, please ignore my tired panda eyes. :) The ride was relatively easy, but tiring nonetheless. It was great to be rewarded (thanks, Allan!) in the form of chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream upon arrival at Shoreline Village!

The return commute felt a lot faster and shorter, although it was a bit tougher on the legs since it was slightly uphill. I’m expecting to be a bit sore tomorrow, but hopefully my wushu training will help ease the effects of the cycling.

I definitely preferred our Sunset Beach to Huntington Beach bike route better (I mean, seriously, biking by the beach/ocean is absolutely unbeatable), but I wouldn’t mind doing this route again.

Work Break at the Park & La Creperie Café

I’ve just settled down in bed after getting home from watching Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2. The Perseid meteor shower was supposed to peak sometime after midnight, but unfortunately any plans to watch said meteor shower were impeded by the fact that the sky was just too cloudy. And so the last segment of Harry Potter was the replacement. But more on that later…

Let’s back track a little bit to about 12 or so hours ago, when the sun actually decided to come out. Work’s been rather busy lately as we are in the crunching period of our recent project, but the good weather that happened to emerge around lunch time was too good to pass up. BeiBei, Allan, and I decided to walk over to the nearby park and eat lunch there while enjoying the fresh air.

Our current obsession is Mexican soda, sold in glass bottles. Nothing beats soda packaged in the old-fashioned way. I’m not a fan of carbonated beverages, but I must admit the real sugar (as opposed to the high-fructose corn syrup found in most sodas manufactured here in America) highly improves the drink, reducing the overly artificial sweetness typically found in American sodas. I’m still not too keen on Coca Cola, but Sprite will do just fine, thank you.

Fast-forward to post-work time, considering how the sky was not being too friendly to us for meteor shower watching, Allan, BeiBei, Tony, and I decided to go with Plan B – finally watch Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2. Our theater of choice – AMC Marina Pacifica 12 in Long Beach. Tony had two free AMC tickets, and I figured we could easily find some good eats around the Belmont Shore area.

Hungry and determined to eat something delicious prior to our 10:10 PM movie showing, our trusty good friend, Yelp, once again came to the rescue. We found La Creperie Café, located on action-packed 2nd Street in Long Beach. This French restaurant has four stars at a whopping 1082 reviews on Yelp. I love the 2nd Street area and I love French restaurants, so you can only imagine my delight at discovering this venue.

Their menu is extensive, filled with breakfast, lunch, and dinner items all at reasonable prices (they have a $$ price range on Yelp). It is no surprise that the majority of their menu is crepes – sweet and savory. Not to worry for those who aren’t too keen on crepes – they have a great selection of non-crepe foods as well.

Menu aside, I found their interior to be well-decorated to the theme. I was especially delighted to find that they had live music! This restaurant definitely gave off that cute, romantic type of ambiance.

After oo-ing and ahh-ing to myself about the interior of the restaurant and attempting to take decent photos with my point-and-shoot camera in the dimly lit room, I finally decided to pay attention to the menu in front of me. Choosing a dinner item was tough, but I eventually settled on the Dipollo savory crepe – fresh wild mushrooms, herbs de provence and mozzarella with chicken in a sherry cream sauce. I was pretty much sold upon reading “fresh wild mushrooms” and “sherry cream sauce.” I’m a huge fan of food with alcohol-based sauces – love the flavor the alcohol infuses. Tony chose the same dish. BeiBei ordered a side of garlic fries, which comes with three sauces – chipotle aioli, ranch, and ketchup. For her entree, she decided on a savory crepe that consisted of lobster and had a lobster-based sauce. I have unfortunately forgotten the name of the dish, and I can’t seem to find it on their online menu. The presentation of her dish was interesting. Instead of one whole crepe, it was served in mini crepe medallions. Allan ordered the steak sandwich – marinated rib eye, romaine lettuce, chipotle aioli, provolone cheese, tomatoes, red onions and avocado on toasted ciabatta, served with garlic French fries and a Caesar salad.

Pictured above in descending order: Garlic fries, sauces for the garlic fries, BeiBei’s lobster crepe medallions, Dipollo crepe, Steak sandwich. I took a taste of every single item we ordered, and I must say that each item on our table was delicious! I’m not a huge fan of lobster, but BeiBei’s dish was pretty good. You can definitely taste the lobster. I absolutely loved my dish. The Dipollo was infused with the flavor of the wild mushroom and sherry cream sauce, much to my enjoyment. Allan’s steak sandwich was tasty – not your average steak sandwich. The steak marination deserves two thumbs up.

I would definitely visit La Creperie again and give their other menu items a try.

Following our dinner, we headed over to the AMC Marina Pacifica 12 to watch Harry Potter. It was a long movie, as expected. The awkward kissing scenes they put into the film still weird me out. Overall, I suppose the movie was alright. I’m not a huge fan of Harry Potter, really, and the whole time I kept thinking “Why? Why? Couldn’t they just do this? Couldn’t they just do that?” Regardless, the movie was still entertaining.

Summing up the day, I’ve arrived at a few conclusions: (1) I definitely would like to spend more time around 2nd Street in Long Beach and try out all the different little restaurants around there. (2) I love French restaurants. (3) Harry Potter will always just be “alright” to me. (4) I am extremely exhausted.

And with that, I bid you adieu.

Happy Birthday, Limzer!

2011-07-30 16.45.45.jpgYellow Polka Dot Top – H&M, Sunglasses – Prada

Okay, so Limzer’s birthday was actually some time this past week, but his birthday party was today. He had a combined birthday celebration along with a few of his friends, kindly hosted by another one of his friends. BeiBei, Allan, and I hit up Limzer’s friend’s house in the LBC (Long Beach) sometime in the afternoon. Their little shindig was complete with DJ, bar, and a ghetto dog/taco cart! Sweeeeet.

When we arrived, Limzer was standing in as DJ. It was definitely nice seeing him as we hadn’t seen each other in a while. He used to work with us, and we haven’t really hung out since he left the company. He’s an awesome dude – I think we should definitely hang out with him more often.

The party was filled with fellow Filipinos (I’m half). Most of the highly-Filipino populated parties I attend are family occasions, so it felt a little strange for me to be surrounded by so many Filipinos at a party yet only knowing one of them. (Haha). In any case, the party was good. I only regret that I didn’t try a ghetto dog or taco because I was just too full from the food and drinks I had earlier.

I hadn’t had any coffee yet when we got to Limzer’s friend’s house, so I decided to look up coffee shops around the area. I figured we could stop by to grab some coffee while we waited for the taco cart to arrive – it was scheduled to arrive at 4PM! I used my handy-dandy Yelp app on my phone and found Portfolio Coffeehouse on 4th Street. Luckily, we were very close to 4th Street – only a few blocks away!

What struck my interest were the number of stars this joint received on Yelp (4 stars!) and the fact that they were supposedly voted the “Best Coffee House in Long Beach.” It was a short walk from the house to the coffee shop, but I still wished I had my bike with me so I could have gotten there faster; it was a hot day!

I opted for a regular latte and indulged in a slice of Oreo cheesecake. BeiBei got an iced Mexican mocha and a Napoleon. Allan purchased a paradise iced tea. Everything was pretty good, though nothing really stood out to me in a special way. Walking over to Portfolio did remind me of how long it had been since I had visited 4th Street. That street is known for its plethora of vintage shops. I think I’ll just have to visit 4th Street again sometime soon and do a little bit of shopping. ;)

Royal Cup Cafe: Gourmet Coffee and Tea House

After adding it to my bookmarks on Yelp upon noticing the quaint cafe across the street from Dean’s Pizza (see Lent, North End Caffe, The Dears, Eulogies, Viento y Agua, and Dean’s Pizza) and seeing that it had a four-star rating on Yelp, I finally had a chance to have dinner at the Royal Cup Cafe in Long Beach.

IMG_3576.JPG

Upon entering the cafe, you are immediately greeted by a room filled of random trinkets, furniture, and various artwork – many paintings cover the walls. Looks like someone did a lot of garage sale shopping. Observing the floor plan and general design of the building, this venue looks to be an old Long Beach house-turned-cafe. There was musical entertainment this evening as someone was playing the piano, which is located in front of the register counter.

IMG_3558.JPG

IMG_3563.JPG

The cafe is dimly lit to create a more homey ambiance. Unfortunately, the lack of light also resulted in dark photos (the flash made it too washed out) and more emphasis on how tired my eyes appeared. This place seems to put emphasis on their home-like atmosphere. They even have an area that looks like a living room – complete with antique couches and a television. In fact, this place was filled with antique furniture.

The Royal Cup Cafe has a diverse menu of food and beverages.

IMG_3592.JPG

Here we have the natural mango iced tea. The flavor reminded me of that of dried mangoes. I did not find this drink super tasty though. I wish it had actually tasted more like natural fresh mangoes other than dried mangoes. They most likely used unripe mangoes, thus the flavor. I did, however, enjoy the fact that they used a large jar to serve this drink.

IMG_3595.JPG

I ordered the triple caramel latte. I found it to be the perfect sweetness, which was good considering I am usually worried to order coffee drinks with syrups since I tend to find them too sweet. This drink probably would’ve been better had I ordered it after my meal as a dessert rather than ordering it with my meal. By the way, both the natural mango iced tea and the triple caramel latte are marked on the menu as Royal Cup specials.

The most extensive portion of their menu, aside from the coffee drinks, is the gourmet panini sandwiches. I definitely had to try one of these.

IMG_3599.JPG

The roast beef French dip (roast beef marinated in au jus sauce, provolone and Swiss cheese, au jus sauce, and mayo), with an addition of portobello mushrooms, was absolutely delicious. The sandwich was juicy, perhaps even tastier and more delectable than that at Champagne (see Champagne French Bakery Cafe). I also enjoyed the small pickled pepper that is served with their sandwiches.

IMG_3603.JPG

The chipotle chicken sandwich (grilled chicken, chipotle sauce, tomato, provolone, light ranch, and mayo) was delicious as well, full of flavor. This sandwich is definitely more rich than the roast beef French dip, but if you’re in the mood for something more creamy and flavorful, this is the sandwich for you.

Aside from the prices, which I found to be slightly high for sandwiches like these, I really enjoyed my meal. I love a good French dip.

IMG_3606.JPG

After finishing my meal, I perused their random furnishings. I found this giant chess set rather amusing. There’s a book and my latte mug for size comparison.

IMG_3620.JPG

IMG_3623.JPG

Yes, I really loved that giant chess set. I wish I could have taken it home! By the way, I was wearing my new Sam Edelman high-heeled clogs. ;] These are indeed taller than I am used to, but they were pretty comfortable to walk in all day. Great with skinny jeans!

IMG_3626.JPG

I noticed they had replaced a couple of the knights with these makeshift wooden horses (on the right). There was only one original knight left (on the left). The poor thing was injured – its head was all taped up. I suppose the other knights took a beating as well or were perhaps misplaced.

IMG_3629.JPG

A perfect ending to this evening was finding this giant metal installation of a coffee cup, complete with steam! This must be part of the series of installations (flowers, bicycles, etc.) that are all over Long Beach, as I mentioned toward the end of this post. Could I take this home along with the giant chess set please?

Lent, North End Caffe, The Dears, Eulogies, Viento y Agua, and Dean’s Pizza

Lent

Last Wednesday, March 9, was Ash Wednesday, which is the first day of Lent. Being a practicing Catholic yet having never really taken Lent very seriously (i.e. I’ve never really “given up” anything for Lent), I decided to try it out, with some company. :]

Here we have our list of Lenten sacrifices that we decided would take effect the Thursday after Ash Wednesday:

Mine:

  • Blog at least 500 words a day. – So I haven’t been doing very well on this one, particularly because I’ve been busy until pretty late at night. This entry is basically my attempt at making up for three days of no blogging.
  • No purchasing any purses. – I haven’t really been shopping lately, so this shouldn’t prove to be too hard.
  • No cursing. – This shouldn’t be a problem for me, although once in a while I’ll slip when caught off-guard.
  • No consumption of burgers or potatoes in fried form. – I rarely get burger cravings, so this shouldn’t be too bad.

His:

  • No cursing. - For every curse word, he has to put $0.25 in the Lent money pot. ;] Currently, it has $2.25.
  • No consumption of burgers or potatoes in fried form.

Okay, so those last two items aren’t really targeted toward me obviously, but since he’s decided to take on giving up those two items, which are difficult for him to do, I decided to help out and give them up myself as well. Besides, it’s a great effort; he’s not even Catholic! I have to him props for that. Plus, giving up cursing for Lent was my suggestion, which he agreed to do.

With that said, I think it’ll be a challenge to blog at least 500 words daily while keeping each entry interesting and of value. And so we begin.

North End Caffe

I had planned to write a blog post about this on Thursday, the day of, but didn’t quite get to writing it.

Lately, for lunch, my co-workers and I have been looking up local/nearby restaurants via Yelp so we could try out new places instead of eating at the same old places. We try to find restaurants that have high ratings, usually around four stars. On Thursday, we decided to try out North End Caffe. North End Caffe is a little cafe in the north end of Manhattan Beach, located on the corner of 35th Street and Highland Ave. This little cafe was featured on the Food Network show, Diners, Drive-ins, & Dives. On Yelp, this place received a four-star rating with 239 reviews. With that said, we figured we had to try it.

Allan ordered the special featured on the chalk board, which was the Short Rib sandwich, $13.00. I believe you could choose a side: french fries or a salad. From what he expressed, it seemed that he enjoyed his sandwich, although he wished he had requested the salad with ranch instead of the organic spring greens, which came with some type of vinaigrette.

Ji ordered the Creole Dawg (2 bacon wrapped hot dogs with swiss, creole mojo, crystal hot sauce, tomato, onion, Zatarain’s salt), $9.75. It is served with a side of Belgian fries. The hot dog wasn’t exactly like he had expected; it was long and narrow. Nonetheless, I think he was satisfied with his order. He said the fries were pretty good. From what I remember from the Yelp reviews, the general consensus is that people like their Belgian fries.

I ordered the Carolina Bomb (southern style pulled pork, cheddar, creole mojo, bbq, pickle, served with ranch salad), $12.75. I generally don’t go for pulled pork or any type of western style barbecue, but for some reason, I decided to give it a try this day. I can’t say I was disappointed. The sandwich was pretty tasty, especially when I put some of their “Crystal” hot sauce on it, which basically tasted like Tabasco to me.

In addition to my sandwich, I also ordered a small latte. To my surprise, it was huge! I tend to order espresso drinks (lattes or cappuccinos) from places that have them on the menu so I can compare and contrast the coffee. The latte at North End Caffe is just like any typical latte. I didn’t really notice anything significant, such as a unique flavor or texture.

My overall opinion of North End Caffe is that they have pretty good simple foods, and it’s worth a try if you’ve never been here before. I don’t particularly enjoy the price range though. For my meal, which consisted of the sandwich and a latte, my total came out to be $17 and some cents. I do like the ambiance of the place. We sat at a table outside; the weather was great. It was really nice enjoying a meal while being able to enjoy the sun and the fresh air and to watch people walking along the street. In addition, the cafe is pretty much right at the beach, probably about a block away. You can see the ocean from the corner of the street; it’s great.

The Dears and Eulogies

On Saturday, the bands The Dears and Eulogies had a free show at Fingerprints, an indepedent record store in Long Beach. We hadn’t really heard much of either band’s music, but we decided it would be a fun experience and made sure to get ourselves onto the guest list. Eulogies was on Morning Becomes Eclectic on KCRW just recently, and their music from that set seemed pretty good.

Eulogies played first, as the opening band. I really enjoyed their set. The intros to their songs were fun and upbeat, and the vocalist had a good stage presence. I also really liked his Gibson guitar. I can definitely see myself listening to their new album, Tear the Fences Down, quite often. I especially like their cover art.

Following Eulogies was The Dears. They had a really good stage presence as well. The vocalist was very energetic and put on a great show. I can’t say I’m personally a fan of their music, though, but it was still a lot of fun listening to them and watching them play. I do like the fact that they have a keyboard. I found it amusing how both bands each had one girl member. Eulogies had a female bassist, and The Dears had a female keyboardist.

After the two bands played, they had signings, so we got a Eulogies vinyl signed by Eulogies and a Fingerprints promo poster for The Dears and Eulogies signed by both bands. Both bands were awesome to chat with; they seemed both really down to earth.

All over Long Beach, there are these interesting installations, one of which is this flower. There are a bunch of these flowers near my neighborhood. I have no idea what they’re for (does anyone?), but I really like these installations, actually. Near my neighborhood, there are a bunch of bicycles done in this fashion, which look awesome. I have been meaning to get photos of each of the installations, but for now all I have is this one of me with one of the flowers I saw last night.

Viento y Agua

After the free show at Fingerprints, we went to Viento y Agua, a small coffee shop nearby. The place has four-and-a-half stars on Yelp, so I was very excited to try out their coffee.

I really liked the interior of this place. It was very cozy and filled with lots of interesting things to peruse. They also call themselves a gallery as well as a coffee house, so it is no surprise to find artwork hanging along the walls. What I found extremely amusing are the skeleton wallpieces. You can see them in the photo hanging up on the blue-painted wall. Like most independent coffee shops in Long Beach, Viento y Agua also hosts small gigs for musical artists. It just so happened that there were several gigs that night – a few solo artists. Jesse Thomas, Jake Newton, and Stacy Clark performed. The lounge area is filled with comfy couches and seats. There is a shelf full of books you can read. They even have a box filled with CDs of artists that have performed there. What’s awesome is there’s a sign on this box that says you can borrow any of the CDs so long as you bring it back. Complete honor system. The cafe offers free Wi-Fi. I would definitely love to sit here and lounge for a few hours, reading a book, listening to music, or surfing the web.

We did not lounge, however. The plan was to grab some quick coffee and proceed to find something for dinner seeing as we were both quite hungry. We each got the Mexican Moka, which is basically a mocha with a slight flavor twist. I’m not sure what else was in there, but I could distinctly taste cinnamon. The Mexican Moka was delicious, but like what happens with me and mochas, it got too sweet later on, and I couldn’t finish the whole thing. I do highly recommend this drink though. I’m sure most people would be able to gulp it all down, no problem. I definitely would like to come back to this place, and next time I’ll be sure to try something less sweet – a latte, most likely.

Dean’s Pizza

We had no idea what to eat for dinner, but we knew a few things: we wanted something quick, we wanted something nearby, we wanted pizza, and we wanted it to be unique and delicious. Using my handy dandy Yelp app on my Android phone, I found Dean’s Pizza. This place has a four-star rating on Yelp with 144 reviews, so we decided we had to try it. Dean’s Pizza is a small place located in a small shopping arcade of a few establishments. They had a few small tables, but I would recommend coming here with take-out in mind. It definitely looked like a diamond in the rough. Everyone on Yelp recommends the Thai curry sauce on the pizza, so we ordered a supreme pizza with the Thai curry sauce and took it back to my place to eat. The flavor was interesting. I’m not really a fan of curry, so I didn’t think the pizza was amazing, but I could definitely see how a lot of people could enjoy it. It was a unique combination of flavors for a pizza. They also have garlic cream sauce and marinara sauce, so if I go pick up a pizza at this place again, I want to try the garlic cream sauce. A huge plus is that their food is pretty inexpensive. We ordered a large pizza for $12.99 and ended up with half the pizza left.

Seems like this past week was filled with lots of Yelping, but it proved to be very handy and I had some interesting tasting experiences. I like the idea of looking up random high-rated places on Yelp and trying them out. I love trying new things, and it’s interesting to see what other users recommend at these popular restaurants.

Overall it was a great weekend. My tummy was well-fed as was my mind.
